About the Art

Wavy strips of textured dichroic glass run vertically through bands of dark grey glass. The dichroic glass is laminated with clear glass with a textured side facing inward, creating a smooth patterned surface.

About the Artists

Paul Marioni, with the help of Ann Troutner on numerous occasions, has completed over eighty-five commissions. Both artists attempt to make the inspiration behind the artwork accessible to the public.

"What was I thinking to get into a field with no history, no books, no teaching? Obviously I wasn't thinking. But we built the studio-glass movement on cooperation, not competition, because there was no past. There was nothing for us to get." – Paul Marioni

Short Bios

Paul Marioni

With degrees in English and philosophy from the University of Cincinnati and San Francisco State University, Paul Marioni has applied his culturally focused education to the world of glass art. Marioni frequently draws inspiration from human nature, creating relatable pieces for public exhibition. He has taught at both the Penland School of Crafts and the Pilchuck Glass School.

Ann Troutner

Ann Troutner received the Pilchuck Work-Study Award in 1981 while she was working as a scientific illustrator and photographer for multiple universities on the West Coast. She worked as an assistant to Dale Chihuly and Marioni from 1982 to 1986.
